Description
This very nice family grouping consists of four ninth plate tintypes. The first is Pvt. Jacob Grove, who served in Co. F, 44th Ohio Infantry (later redesignated the 8th Ohio Cavalry). Grove was born on October 11, 1828, and died on January 16, 1906. His occupation was listed as farmer on an invalid pension request. Records for Grove are scarce, but he can be found in the pension request and a government summary of his invalid filing and death filing by his widow (second wife). Grove’s first wife Sarah died in 1881, and he remarried in 1883 (Fidelia Wilson). Grove can also be found on “Findagrave.com.” Grove’s image is a typical ninth plate pose except for the Colt pocket model pistol he is holding and the bandage on his other hand. Presumably he was slightly wounded in some action his unit participated in. Images of bandaged soldiers are not common and are highly collectable. The three family images are also ninth plate tintypes. They are Grove’s first wife Sarah, his daughter Mary Ann and his mother-in-law Margaret Waltman. All images are in good condition and housed in complete leatherette cases with repaired spines.
