Description
Henry C. Irby enlisted as a lieutenant in Co. D, 9th Tenn. Inf. on May 15, 1861. The regiment was hard fought at Shiloh, and the casualties were so great that Irby was briefly in charge of the regiment. Irby was promoted to captain in May of 1862. The regiment suffered great losses at Perryville, where Irby was wounded and captured. He was eventually imprisoned at Fort Delaware and exchanged on May 21, 1863. Due to his wounds, Irby completed his service as an assistant quartermaster. Irby was born on June 16, 1835, and died on February 18, 1917. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Jackson, Tenn.
