Description
Very nice condition CDV of a US Navy Lt. Commander. The shoulder straps and 3 & 1 sleeve braid are correct with respect to the 1863 regulations for officers. The verso of the CDV is dated Jan. 1868 with an unreadable notation, except for the ship name “Guerriere.” An old note from the long-time collector says the officer is the US Navy Commander, USS Guerriere, which would make him Thomas G. Corbin, but I am uncertain of this association. The second USS Guerriere was launched on September 9, 1865 in the Boston Navy Yard and commissioned on May 21, 1867, with Commander Thomas G. Corbin in command. She was named for the victory of the USS Constitution over HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812. She served as the flagship of the South Atlantic Squadron and with the Mediterranean Squadron before being permanently decommissioned on March 22, 1872. On September 27, 1870, she received the body of Admiral David Farragut for transport to New York. The Lt. Commander’s picture on this CDV is correct for a Civil War US Navy Lt. Commander. The officer certainly served during the war, based on his rank, and the image could have been taken during the war. It is possible that it is Thomas G. Corbin, but further research would be needed to confirm. Priced accordingly.
