Description
This sixth plate ambrotype is a seated view of a Confederate soldier wearing a shell jacket with what appears to be Gibson contract wooden buttons. The pose is a classic view with the subject seated with one arm resting on a table. A book is also placed on the table next to his arm. The Gibson brothers were located in Richmond and provided millions of wooden buttons to the Confederacy. Not all jackets provided by the Confederate government utilized state seal or letter buttons, as eagle buttons, wooden buttons and even flower buttons were common. The image exhibits some solarization but the soldier is not really impacted. There is a spot on the emulsion above the soldier’s ear that also has minimal impact to the subject. This is a nice Confederate image with interesting uniform content. The image is housed in a complete leatherette case with separated spine.
