Description

This sixth plate Confederate ambrotype features some great content.  The soldier is posed with his weapons held up in each hand for all to see.  He is obviously ready for a fight.  Prominently displayed is the large D guard Bowie knife with gilded guard.  He has a Colt revolver in his other hand, which is either a navy or a pocket model.  It is hard to tell which model Colt it is, because the soldier has tilted the gun toward his chest.  He is wearing an unadorned frock coat with a single row of gilded buttons and a kepi with gilded side buttons.  His belt has a simple roller buckle, but on the belt is a completely visible holster for the revolver.  The image is likely early war and has a soft emulsion look to it.  There are a few blemishes visible in the emulsion, but they do not detract from the image.  There is a ring of solarization under the mat, which is not very visible and does not affect the displayed image.  D guard images are some of the most sought after and desirable of Confederate images.  This one is worthy of the best collections.  The image is housed in a decent thermoplastic case with a wobbly hinge.
