Description
The Union soldier in this sixth plate tintype is double armed with a pistol and bayonet in his belt. The pistol is quite uncommon in a civil war image, as it is a Marston pocket revolver. The Marston Pocket Model Revolver was a 31 caliber 5-shot percussion revolver with walnut grips and blued finish. Many were sold under the trade name Union Arms Company. The fourth and fifth models had fluted cylinders, as can be seen in the image. In addition to the weapons, the soldier is wearing a US issue sword belt with a cap box attached. His shell jacket is worn over a checked shirt, and his trousers are lightly tinted blue. His kepi is worn in a jaunty manner which contrasts with the serious expression on his face. The image is in very nice condition and is housed in a complete leatherette case. This image is worthy of any fine Union image collection. It is well posed with a lot of interesting content, and it is unique for the unusual Marston revolver.
