Description

Daguerreotype and Ruby Ambrotype, 9th plate

Very nice ruby ambrotype of a soldier from the first or second New Hampshire.  The daguerreotype is of the same individual as a younger man.  The uniform was issued to the first and second New Hampshire and consisted of a gray wool swallow-tail coat with New Hampshire state seal buttons (under a loupe you can just make out the ship on one of the buttons).  The uniform was trimmed in a thin red cording around the collar, cuffs, jacket face and the base of the cap.  The cording does not stand out in this image.  Due to the style of the uniform, it has been mistaken for southern and even published as so.  Images of soldiers from these units are not often seen.  This one is unique in that a civilian daguerreotype accompanies the military image.  As a bonus, note that the soldier displays a small revolver.  The images are housed together in a nice thermoplastic case.
