Description

This very nice albumen shows a standing Collis S. Hough, who enlisted in the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, Company I.  Hough is nicely posed standing next to a column with one arm resting on the column.  He has sergeant stripes on his sleeves, his rank at enlistment.  He was reduced to ranks a couple of times and finished his tour of duty as a sergeant again, promoted on October 10, 1863.  This date is important, as it helps to date the image.  Hough transferred from Company I to Company C on August 4, 1863.  Hough is holding his kepi in the image, and clearly seen on the hat are a set of crossed cannons, regimental number 1 and company letter C.  His sleeves show his sergeant stripes.  The image was therefore taken after his transfer to Company C and his promotion to sergeant.  There is a very nice period identification on the back of the image, which I have pictured in the gallery.  The note says:

Collis S. Hough

Enlisted as sergeant in the US service in Company I 1″ Conn Volunteer Heavy Artillery May 23″ 1861.  Transferred to Co. I Aug 4″ 1863.  Re-enlisted as Veteran Sept 25″ 1863.  Participated in the following battles.

Malvern Hill July 1 “62

Siege of Petersburg and Richmond Va from May 1864 to Apr. 1865

Was discharged Sept 25 “1865 by reason of close of war.

This is a very nice albumen of a soldier with a very good service record presented in a period note.  The original wood frame is in nice condition for its age, and the image is very clear.
