Description

Ambrotype, 9th plate

Although this image displays some uniform characteristics that appear to be Confederate, it is most likely an Illinois soldier.  Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and New York all issued shell jackets that are very similar to Confederate depot jackets.  This image has been evaluated by a noted uniform collector who provided his excellent technical expertise.  It could be Indiana or Ohio, too.  The image has very good content for a ninth plate.  The soldier is displaying a small revolver held across his chest.  In addition to the buttons on the placket, his jacket has cuff buttons and buttons on the shoulder straps.  All the buttons have been painted with gold paint, obscuring the design.  However, they do appear to be eagle buttons to me.  Completing the ensemble is a large bow tie which has been tied in an unkempt manner.  The image is housed in a nice thermoplastic case.
