Description

Very fine ninth plate clear glass ambrotype of an unidentified Confederate officer with a black notched collar on his frock coat.  He is very likely a surgeon.  A similar unidentified image is in the collection of the American Civil War Museum (Museum of the Confederacy).  There are two images of identified Confederate surgeons in Dave Mark’s “Maryland Confederate Faces.” and they are both wearing uniform frock coats with black notched collars.  There is a lot to see in this small image.  The individual is wearing a checked shirt, vest, tie and frock coat.  The buttons are gilded on the shirt, open vest and coat.  His watch chain and wedding band are also gilded, and his cheeks are tinted.  A book rests on the table under his hand.  This is obviously a well-to-do individual who took great care in his dress.  Definitely a quality Confederate image.  Housed in a leatherette case with repaired spine.
