Description
Branch enlisted on August 15, 1861 as a private in Co. A, 44th VA Infantry (Appomattox Invincibles). His company transferred to the artillery on March 27, 1862 and became Co. A, 20th Bttn. VA Heavy Artillery. They were stationed in the Richmond defenses for the remainder of the war. Branch was made a prisoner of war at Farmville on April 6, 1865 and was sent to Point Lookout, MD, where he took the oath of allegiance on June 23, 1865. The image is accompanied by a sixth plate daguerreotype of his father, Robert H. Branch.
