Description

This image has a lot of good content for a ninth plate.  The soldier is wearing an 1851 Shako with Jeff Davis hat eagle and wreath with the company letter D inside.  He has a set of epaulets on his frock coat, which is adorned with a row of Massachusetts staff buttons.  The state seal is difficult to see, but you can identify the raised arm on several buttons under magnification.  He is also wearing a belt with a two-piece eagle buckle.  The image is a Neff’s Patent Melainotype, which is stamped on one edge as is usual with the Neff plate.  Peter Neff’s patent has a date of February 19, 1856, so the image is later than that.  The image has some slight creases and scuffs, which are not very noticeable or objectionable.  The image is housed in a half leatherette case.
