Description
This beautiful ninth plate ruby ambrotype has all the content you could want in a Confederate image. The young soldier is dressed in a simple battle shirt with contrasting collar and placket. He has dressed up his appearance for the photograph with a large bowtie. He is presenting for the picture what looks like a Model 1816 conversion musket (the escutcheon visible opposite the lock plate provides a clue). His pose is serious, an indication of his determination to defend his state. An unusual and attractive backdrop with trees and a hilltop castle ruin completes the image. The image is in excellent condition and is housed in a good condition thermoplastic case with a chip on one corner. A more attractive Confederate image would be hard to find.
