Description

This Confederate is identified in the case as Henry Walter.  In period writing is the following:

“Henry Walter Nov 8th 1862”

Henry is posed from the waist up in his depot jacket with gilded buttons, which is a typical pose for 9th plate images.  The image came from the Petersburg, VA area.  There are several Virginia soldiers with the name Henry Walter, so a definitive identification is difficult.  The most likely choice based on the Petersburg association is the Henry Walter that served in Co. A, 25th Battalion of Virginia infantry (Richmond Battalion).  Henry enlisted in that unit in September 1862 and is on the Nov/Dec 1862 muster roll.  His shell jacket looks very new in the November 8 dated picture, which it would be for a newly enlisted soldier.  The case is leatherette in OK condition.  This is a nice and inexpensive Confederate image.
