Description

Early quarter plate ambrotype of a militia artillery soldier, possibly an officer, wearing the 1851 pattern shako.  The image is an early ambrotype, on thick glass, that was sealed at one time and backed with thick paper.  The soldier’s buttons are gilded, but they can still be seen as three piece staff buttons.  The shako is a beautiful example of the model 1851, with the round pompom, Jeff Davis hat plate, company letter “A” and crossed cannons.  If you like images with headgear, this is a superior picture of a shako.  The image originated in Massachusetts, so it could conceivably be a Massachusetts soldier.  Housed in a complete leatherette case with repaired spine.
