Description

The soldier in this fine quarter plate ambrotype is  dressed as a militia officer, most likely pre-war.  He is wearing a dress uniform with a two-piece buckle that is likely of the eagle variety.  His sword appears to be a model 1850 foot officers sword.  The image is in excellent condition with a generous amount of gilding on the buttons, epaulettes, buckle, collar, sword and watch chain.  The ambrotype process was developed in the early 1850’s, and this image was likely taken in the mid-1850’s.  The case, mat and preserver are early styles that one would expect to find with a daguerreotype.  The case is in excellent condition, with a repaired hinge.  This is a very fine image of a militia officer.
