Description

One of two similar photographs, Lt. Bell is pictured with his wife Emeline and Daughter Nannie Claudia.  He enlisted on May 7, 1861 at Jerusalem, VA as a 1st Lieutenant in Co. H, 5th VA Cavalry (Southampton Cavalry).  He was not reelected in May 1862 when the army was reorganized due to the new conscription law.  He was drafted into Co. I, 13th VA Cavalry on November 10, 1864.  Bell was born on December 7, 1832 and died on August 25, 1870.  He is buried in Poplar Springs Cemetery, Franklin, VA.  The image comes with Bell’s will written at the beginning of the war, a daguerreotype of Bell as a younger man and pictures of family members.
