Description
This crystal clear image depicts a member of a New York Zouave unit. He is dressed in a New York state jacket with state seal staff buttons. Using a loupe, the shield in the New York state seal can be seen on the button second from the bottom. He is wearing a simple fez with tassel. Many of these were red with a blue tassel, or blue with a yellow tassel. The state jackets were primarily dark blue, although some were grey. New York produced a good number of Zouave units, so it would be difficult to determine the soldier’s regiment. The simple uniform may be helpful with respect to any research. The image is a quarter plate ruby ambrotype in excellent condition. The case is thermoplastic with a large crack on the back that has been glued, and a replacement pillow. This is a very fine Union image.
