Schuyler, Hartley and Graham was organized on March 1, 1854 as a firearms retail business by Jacob Schuyler, Marcellus Hartley and Malcolm Graham. By 1860 they had become the largest firearms dealer in the United States, with two stores in New York City (19 Maiden Lane and 22 John Street). In 1862 Hartley was appointed chief European purchasing agent for the Union army, and spent about nine months in that capacity. In March 1865 the company hired Henry tomes and Charles May to be resident buyers in London and Paris, and the company became Schuyler, Hartley, Graham & Co.
