Description

From Brunswick Co., VA, Poynor graduated fourth in the Class of 1860 from VMI.  He served as a drill instructor at Fort Powhatan in VA in the Spring of 1861.  He spent the remainder of the war as Captain, Corps of Cadets at the University of Alabama where he was a professor of tactics.  Poynor was in the field several times with the Cadets.  He remained in Alabama after the war, with occupations of lawyer, teacher and farmer.  He was born on November 14, 1835 in Lawrenceville, VA, and died on April 17, 1916.  He is buried in Mesopotamia Cemetery, Eutaw, Alabama.  The image is signed by Rees with a simple “R.”  The image is ID’d in the case, and comes with a letter of identification from a descendent.
