Description

This stunning ambrotype depicts a pre-war VMI cadet in furlough uniform.  The image is correct such that the “VMI” letters on the hat are not reversed.  This is because the image was made using the Cutting’s patent methodology, where the emulsion side of the glass is turned around and a blank piece of glass is added behind it to protect the emulsion.  There is no lacquer to make the image positive, so a black piece of paper is placed behind the image.  The image itself is clear glass.  The cadet is unfortunately not identified, but strong research could change that.  No clearer ambrotype of a VMI cadet exists.  The quality of the photography is exceptional, with beautiful coloring and gilding.  Housed in a complete leatherette case with repaired spine.
