Description
This chest view image of Surgeon John Dixon (Dickinson) is an interesting CDV. In period writing on the back is “Yours (illegible), Dr. Dixon Surg. 195. O.V.I. late Asst. Surg. 36” O.V.I.” I had difficulty finding his record of service until I found him listed in Civil War Data as john Dickinson. The name must correctly be Dixon, as written on the CDV. The record matches that listed on the CDV. Dixon was commissioned into Field and Staff, Ohio 36th infantry on 7/4/1862. On 3/18/1865 he was commissioned into Field and Staff, 195th Ohio Infantry. He was mustered out on 12/18/1865 at Washington, DC. The record will be included with the CDV. The CDV is backmarked E.W. Beckwith, Photographer, 220 King Street, Alexandria, VA. A cancelled tax stamp is affixed. Dixon is posed chest up in his double-breasted frock coat with rank strap visible. The strap includes an oak leaf, likely a major’s rank. The image is clear and the CDV is in nice condition. A different picture of Dixon is included in the service record. Both are obviously the same individual.
