Description

This superb sixth plate ambrotype of a standing Confederate provides the type of content that is highly sought out by image collectors.  The soldier is in a three-quarter length standing pose and dressed in an early war frock coat.  The image is so clear that you can see the quality of the fabric under magnification.  The soldier is wearing a kepi with letters obscured by the gold paint.  His leather belt is completed with a rectangular plate that has been gilded, but it appears to be a plain sheet brass type.  Attached to the belt is a bayonet in the scabbard as well as the holster for the pocket model Colt revolver that he is displaying.  The best part of the pose is the large s-guard Bowie knife held in his right hand.  The knife is large enough that it goes from his waist to his neck.  The image has the look of a Virginian to me, although there is no proof.  The image exhibits some solarization, but it is mostly under the mat and does not affect the image at all.  The image is housed in a complete leatherette case with repaired spine. It would be a centerpiece to many collections.
