Description

This is a well-known published image that has been in both the William Albaugh and Bill Turner collections.  It was published in Albaugh’s “Confederate Faces” and Turner’s “Even More Confederate Faces.”  The image depicts a Virginia militiaman in full uniform with sword.  His uniform mirrors the US Army 1858 regulations, which Virginia adopted.  His Hardee hat has the letters “VA” inside a wreath, reversed in the ambrotype as “AV.”  This is a desirable hat insignia.  He is wearing a white web belt with what looks like a stamped Virginia belt plate under his hand, although the design is not visible.  This is a very nice Virginia militia image with great content and collector provenance.  It is housed in a complete leatherette case.
