Description

This attractive quarter plate ruby ambrotype depicts two seated double-armed Confederates soldiers.  The image surfaced in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  Both soldiers are dressed in single-button frock coats with decorative trim.  Both men are wearing slouch hats.  They certainly could be related.  The soldier on the left displays a clip-point side knife and has a Remington-Rider pocket percussion revolver tucked into his frock coat between the second and third buttons from the bottom.  The revolver grip and part of the trigger guard are very clear upon close inspection.  The soldier on the right has a side knife in his belt as well as a Whitney pocket model percussion revolver.  The uniforms have a homemade look about them.  The sleeve trim is thicker on the left soldier’s uniform.  A very similar uniform is pictured on page 187 of Bill Turner’s classic “Even More Confederate Faces.”  A copy of the picture is included for reference.  The image is housed in a complete leatherette case.
