Description
This attractive sixth plate ruby ambrotype depicts two seated Union soldiers smoking cigars. The image is nicely posed by the photographer and is very clear. Both soldiers are well-dressed in frock coats with vests and neckties. The uniforms appear to be brand new, leading one to wonder if the image was taken right after enlistment, with the men enjoying the moment with cigars. One soldier is wearing a kepi and the other a slouch hat. Buttons, tie pins and watch chains are gilded. The collars on the frock coats have been turned down, lending an air of informality to the image. Images with cigars are uncommon and very collectible. The image is housed in a complete leatherette case with repaired spine.
