Description

Tintype, 6th plate

This simple but nice image depicts a seated Union officer.  His hair is combed, but a bit unruly, as if he removed his hat for the photograph.  Only the top button of his single-breasted frock coat is buttoned, as was common at that time.  Under the open coat he is also wearing a vest.  The coat and vest buttons have been gilded.  Under a loupe the two bars of a captain’s rank can be seen on the shoulder strap to the left side of the image.  This is a nice and inexpensive Civil War image.  It is housed in a half leatherette case.
