Description
Tintype, quarter plate
This nice image depicts a Union private standing with his musket. His belt plate, breastplate, buttons and kepi buckle have been gilded. A cartridge box is visible to the left, and a bayonet in the scabbard can be seen to the right. Another bayonet is attached to the musket. The soldier is standing before a painted canvas backdrop with a martial scene. A large tree is on the left side of the image, and Sibley tents and cannons are on the right. Looking closely, there are people at the cannons and tree. The image is a full standing pose, and a portion of the stand can be seen behind the boots. The image is somewhat dark and exhibits craquelures under magnification, likely in the lacquer sealant. The image is stable. The mat is by Scoville, as the company name can be found on a back edge of the mat. The mat has also been neatly folded over the image, making it difficult to remove from the image. This is certainly an interesting image, and it is housed in a complete leatherette case with repaired spine.
