Description

This CDV depicts James Harrison Williams in civilian clothing.  Williams was born and died in Woodstock, VA.  He graduated from the University of VA law school in 1857, and then moved to Iowa, where he was elected to the state legislature.  He returned to VA after the outbreak of war and recruited men for R. Preston Chew’s horse artillery in Turner Ashby’s famous 7th VA cavalry.  He entered service as a sergeant, and later had promotions to second and first lieutenant.  He was detailed as a Judge Advocate General in the Cavalry corps, and was paroled at Winchester, VA.  Post war he served in the VA legislature and was a brigadier general of VA militia.  The verso of the CDV has J. H. Williams written on it, as well as Gen. J. H. Williams Woodstock Va.  A picture painted of Williams in Confederate uniform can be found on his Find a Grave page.  This is an uncommon CDV of a prominent member of Ashby’s horse artillery.  It is in nice condition as shown in the pictures.
