Description

This nice sixth plate tintype of a double armed standing Yankee has some interesting content.  The soldier is posed in front of a portable canvas backdrop with his musket at his side.  The musket has the bayonet attached.  In his belt is what appears to be a colt revolver.  He is dressed in a frock coat with gilded saber belt plate.  His buttons are also gilded.  The image looks to be taken by a travelling photographer in the field.  Of most interest is what is hiding under the mat.  On the left side of the image is the back of a standing soldier and on the right can be seen the knee and hand of a seated soldier.  At top right is a portion of a wooden structure to which the backdrop is attached.  All of this can be seen in the gallery image.  The photographer was likely finished with the soldier on the left while the seated soldier was waiting for his picture to be taken.  Accidental soldiers in an image are not common but usually occur where a photographer had a line of soldiers to photograph.  The image is housed in a complete leatherette case with repaired spine.
