Description

Although unsigned, this beautiful quarter plate ruby ambrotype is undoubtedly a product of Charles Rees.  The Rees studio props are definitive, and include the column with book, table and drapery seen in numerous other Rees images.  The subject is an unknown artillery enlisted man in a shell jacket.  His slouch hat displays a set of crossed cannons which define his branch of service.  He is wearing a pair of up to the knee boots, which give him the look of a horse artilleryman.  Quite unusual for a Rees image is the use of ruby glass, which was not common.  This is a very attractive image with excellent content.  It came from the collection of Bill Turner, and the thermoplastic case bears his ID number.
