Description
Very nice quarter plate ruby ambrotype of a New Hampshire sergeant holding a musket and displaying his kepi in the classic New Hampshire photographic fashion. Unfortunately, the soldier did not hold the kepi completely steady, so the letters are somewhat fuzzy. They are still readable, however, and identify the soldier as a member of Co. C, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry. The image has great content, as the sergeant stripes are very clear on his frock coat which is unbuttoned except for the top button. His vest is visible and he is standing with bayonetted musket in one hand and kepi in the other. It may be possible to identify him due to the early war nature of the image and the rank. The 2nd New Hampshire Infantry had a strong fighting record, including First Manassas, Williamsburg, Seven Days, Second Manassas and Gettysburg. Housed in a complete leatherette case with repaired spine.
