Description
Inside the case, in period writing, is the name Thos. C. Butler. There is also a typed note that says:
Sgt. Thomas C. Butler
Co. D 2nd MD. Inf.
WIA at Cold Harbor 1864.
Butler enlisted on 9/1/1862 as a first sergeant in Co. D, 2nd Maryland Infantry. He was surrendered on 4/9/1865 at Appomattox Court House. Butler is posed in a dark suit with a very large, clipped point Bowie knife. His cheeks and hands have been tinted. He has the serious look of a new recruit. If you collect Maryland images, you should consider this one. Maryland images infrequently come up for sale, and this one has great content. The sixth plate clear glass ambrotype is housed in a complete leatherette case with split spine.
