Description

Beautiful pre-war militia officer’s buckle in non-dug condition.  The buckle has the eagle with shield design surrounded by 24 stars.  The tongue is of three-piece construction with a stamped disc soldered to the bar, which is then soldered to the belt loop.  The wreath is of two-piece construction with the wreath soldered to the belt loop.  Both tongue and wreath are bench marked with the number 1111, which can be clearly seen in the scan.  The buckle likely dates to the 1840’s.  One and two-piece militia buckles were commonly seen early in the war.  This is a very fine condition buckle that would add to any non-dug collection.  It has a nicely aged patina and shows traces of gold gilt on the back.
