Description

Ruby Ambrotype, 9th plate

This fine ninth plate ruby ambrotype depicts a Federal Bandsman.  His kepi has the hat letters “BAND” on the crown, which are, of course, backwards due to the photographic technique.  His belt is buckled by a two-piece belt plate with what looks like an eagle motif. He is wearing a frock coat and has a shoulder belt with a very ornate buckle.  I have previously sold a bandsman image with a similar shoulder belt which was attached to a haversack style carry bag.  Also on the kepi is an infantry horn insignia with a number in the loop.  The number looks like an 8 or a backwards 3.  The image came out of Montpelier, Vermont, so this bandsman could very well be a member of the Third Vermont Regiment band. The image is housed in a quad 9th plate thermoplastic case in decent condition.  Three other images in the case are a civilian image of the soldier and two images of women.  The women do not look to be the same person, so one is likely the soldier’s wife and the other a relative.  If you collect band images, or family groupings, this will certainly be a great addition to your collection.
